Breathing is not something we have to think about doing all the time. The process is instinctive and automatic. Itās driven by the most primitive part of our brains ā the brainstem. And more precisely, by a smaller area of the brainstem called the medulla oblongata. This area regulates respiration. All mammals share these features, but as far as we know, only humans are able to regulate their breathing.
Breath work comes in a wide variety of forms, each with its own particular benefits. Long, deep breathing helps the body relax and regulates emotions. Alternate nostril breathing stimulates and energizes the mind. Rapid, rhythmic nasal breathing oxygenates the blood while stimulating the nervous system. Additionally, honing the quality of the breath creates deep core strength and stability.
