A fundamental belief in Taoism is there are two natural, opposing, and complementary energies in the universe: Yang, which is masculine, and Yin, which is feminine. These opposing forces are in a state of dynamic equilibrium and mutually reinforce one another.
Yin energy characteristics include those that are passive, receptive, and sensitive. Yin energy is nurturing and soft. It’s contemplative and slow. It’s represented by cold, Winter, the moon and rest. Yin energy is a contracting inward; a gentle exhale or a quiet sigh.
