Recently, I was reminded by a dear friend of the symbolism of the evergreen. Evergreens have been used to celebrate and honor this season long before the arrival of the Christmas tree. Pagans would place evergreen branches or Yule trees indoors as a way to bring life into the darkness of winter.
Evergreens are inherently healing and magical. Their beauty and life force are strong during the coldest and darkest times in winter. Their fragrance invigorating, stimulating, purifying and grounding all at once.
Just as the evergreen reminds us that life endures, lighting candles at night during winter is a ritual that brings warmth to the darkest days. The flickering flame becomes a beacon of comfort and connection, dispelling the chill and darkness while reminding us of the power of light, love, and the human spirit in the face of winter's stillness.
